Megger SWG 500 16 kV Surge Wave Generator

Overview

The Megger SWG 500 is a portable surge wave generator (thumper) used to pinpoint faults on underground power cables. It stores energy in a capacitor bank and discharges it into the cable, igniting an arc at the fault point; the resulting acoustic and electromagnetic transients can then be detected at the surface with a ground-microphone receiver such as the Megger digiPHONE+, allowing the fault to be located precisely for excavation.

With a maximum surge voltage of 16 kV in three selectable ranges (0–4, 0–8 and 0–16 kV) and 500 J of surge energy, the SWG 500 suits a wide range of standard distribution cables. It also offers DC testing up to 300 mA, adjustable output voltage and a selectable surge interval, making it a flexible tool for cable-fault pinpointing.
