Overview

The Megger Split-Box is a classic, lightweight pipe and cable locator used to trace underground conductive networks – water and gas mains, telephone, cable-TV and electric power cables – and to determine their burial depth. It also helps find metallic masses such as valve caps and manhole covers, making it a practical tool for utilities, contractors and survey crews.

The “split-box” design uses separate hand-held transmitter and receiver units, both compact and battery-powered. The transmitter energises the buried line either inductively (no direct connection needed) or conductively (connected directly to an exposed line, optionally with a ground rod for greater range), while the receiver uses peak and null detection to pinpoint the line’s position. Operating at 126 kHz with around 50 hours of battery life, it offers straightforward, reliable locating in the field.
