Megger ARM 3-E Arc Stabilising Unit

Overview

The Megger ARM 3-E is an arc-reflection stabilising unit used to prelocate faults on power cables by the Arc Reflection Method (ARM). Many cable faults are high-resistance or intermittent and are invisible to a plain time-domain reflectometer (TDR), because the fault only shows up when a high voltage causes it to break down. The ARM 3-E bridges a surge generator and a TDR so that these faults can be found quickly and accurately without repeatedly surging the cable at full energy.

In operation, the ARM 3-E couples a low-voltage TDR pulse onto the cable at the same time as a surge generator ignites an arc at the fault. The unit stabilises and lengthens that arc, momentarily turning the high-resistance fault into a low-resistance short circuit that the TDR can clearly see and measure as a reflection, while protecting the reflectometer from the high voltage. It is compatible with surge generators and reflectometers generally, making it a flexible addition to a cable-fault-location set-up and helping engineers prelocate high-resistance and flashing faults reliably.
