Megger Tinsley Dry-Film Thickness Gauge

Overview

The Megger Tinsley gauge is a simple, reliable dry-film thickness gauge for measuring the thickness of nonmagnetic coatings and platings – such as paint, plastic, zinc or chromium – applied over a ferrous (iron or steel) base. Pencil-like and pocket-sized, it needs no power or setup, making it ideal for quick, on-the-spot checks in paint and plating shops.

It works by a magnetic pull-off technique: a magnet is placed on the coated surface, the gauge body is withdrawn to extend an internal calibrated spring, and the coating thickness is read from the spring extension at the point the magnet detaches. Measuring from 5 to 500 µm (0.2 to 15 mils), the gauge is nondestructive, works on curved surfaces and is unaffected by vibration or temperature, giving dependable results with minimal skill.
