Megger TXL870 Overview

Substations usually carry either a 110 V class battery of 54 cells or a 220 V class battery of 108 cells, and the Megger TXL870 is sized to serve both from one housing: it is rated up to 280 V DC, with up to 112 A available at lower voltages (140 V). On its own it is plain resistive load with no regulation. Once it is wired to the battery beside a TORKEL, the TORKEL holds the total discharge current steady, measures it with its clamp-on probe and turns the TXL870 off from its TXL STOP output when it stops.

Megger’s TORKEL 900-series datasheet V12 rates the TXL870 at up to 280 V DC (56 A maximum at 280 V), 112 A and 15.8 kW. On selector position 1 (4.95 Ω) it draws about 50 A from a 108-cell bank at 248.4 V, and on position 3 (1.24 Ω) about 100 A from a 54-cell bank at 124.2 V; position 2 is 2.48 Ω. Several TXL units can be combined with the TORKEL for test currents of up to several kA, protected by thermal cut-outs and automatic overload protection. It is mains powered for field work: the TORKEL controls the discharge, measures the total current with a clamp-on ammeter and stops the TXL870 through its TXL STOP output, so the test is logged as one.
