Megger TXL865 Overview

Among the five TXL extra loads, the Megger TXL865 absorbs the most power, 25.5 kW, and its 260 V DC limit takes it up to 108-cell lead-acid strings at float voltage (248.4 V). Like every TXL it has no controller inside. You cable it directly to the battery next to a TORKEL, and the TORKEL does the rest: it keeps the total current constant, reads it through the DC clamp-on probe and drops the TXL865 out through TXL STOP when the test is over.

Megger rates the TXL865 for battery strings up to 260 V DC, with up to 117 A and 25.5 kW of extra load. If one unit is still not enough, more TXL units or a second TORKEL can be linked in, and thermal cut-outs with automatic overload protection guard each unit. Mains powered and built for field use, it runs under the control of the TORKEL, which measures the total current and stops the TXL through its TXL STOP output, so the whole discharge is logged as one test.

Who the Megger TXL865 is for

The Megger TXL865 is for engineers who discharge-test high-voltage battery strings, such as 110 V and 220 V substation banks or UPS strings of around 100 lead-acid cells, where the TORKEL alone cannot draw the current the test calls for. The TORKEL keeps control of the test and measures the total battery current with its DC clamp-on probe, while the TXL865 simply adds resistive load connected straight to the battery. The TORKEL 900 has a galvanically isolated TXL STOP output that is used to stop the extra load discharging.

Datasheet examples for lead-acid cells at 2.3 V and 1.8 V per cell show what each selector position draws:

• Position 1 (2.65 Ω): 108 cells, 93.7 A at 248.4 V falling to 73.4 A at 194.4 V
• Position 2 (5.05 Ω): 108 cells, 49.2 A at 248.4 V falling to 38.5 A at 194.4 V
• Position 3 (0.12 Ω): 6 cells, 115 A at 13.8 V falling to 90 A at 10.8 V

Short answers about the TXL865:

• What is the Megger TXL865 rated for? Megger’s TORKEL 900-series datasheet (V12) gives a maximum of 260 V DC, 117 A and 25.5 kW, with up to 98 A available at the full 260 V.
• Can the TXL865 run a test on its own? No. It has no control or measuring of its own. A TORKEL sets the test, measures the total current with the clamp-on probe and stops the extra load through its TXL STOP output.
