Megger CI/LCI Cable Identifier

The Megger CI/LCI is for cable jointers, utility field crews and industrial electricians who must pick the correct de-energised primary out of a group before cutting, and who also need to identify live LV secondaries (including neutrals) up to 240 V AC, or 440 V AC with the optional LCI TX-440 transmitter. Identification uses the polarity and magnitude of a DC pulse from the transmitter (up to 100 A from the CI TX on de-energised cables, about 80 A from the LCI TX on live cables), read by the receiver and a clip-on probe. Megger states the system needs no user adjustments and will not give a false positive.

The Megger CI/LCI Cable Identifier is designed to ensure the safe identification of de-energized primary cables within a group of energized or de-energized cables. It also allows for the identification of live secondary cables up to 240 V AC, with an optional capability to handle up to 440 V AC. The identification process is highly reliable and safe, utilizing a DC pulse system to avoid any false positives: up to 100 A from the CI TX on de-energised cables and 80 A from the LCI TX on live cables. The CI TX can be powered from 100–240 V AC mains or its rechargeable battery, which gives about 4 hours of operation; the CI RX receiver runs for more than 50 hours on two AA cells.

The CI/LCI system safely identifies cables using a DC pulse method, which involves the detection of the polarity and signal strength of the pulse (up to 100 A from the CI TX, 80 A from the LCI TX) emitted by the transmitter. This signal is captured by a receiver equipped with a clip-on probe. The transmitter is versatile, operating either from 100–240 V AC mains or its rechargeable battery (about 4 hours per charge, per the Megger data sheet). The system is designed to work without any need for adjustments by the user and is engineered to eliminate the risk of false positive results in cable identification.

What crews ask before ordering a CI/LCI:

• Does it work on live primary cables? No. Megger designed the CI path for de-energised primaries. Live work on the CI/LCI is for secondary cables up to 240 V AC (440 V optional).
• Can it give a wrong “identified” reading? Megger states the polarity-and-magnitude method will not produce a false positive.
• What if I cannot clamp the cable? The standard kit includes two touch sensors for spaces where a flexible clamp will not fit.
• How long do the batteries last? Megger’s CI/LCI data sheet gives about 4 hours for the CI TX transmitter on its rechargeable battery (or run it from 100–240 V AC mains) and more than 50 hours for the CI RX receiver on 2 × AA cells.
