Megger digiPHONE+2 Overview

The Megger digiPHONE+2 is a shock-wave (surge) receiver for pinpointing underground cable faults using combined acoustic and electromagnetic methods. It listens for the acoustic discharge of a surge pulse while simultaneously detecting the magnetic pulse, then displays the time difference so the operator can walk directly to the fault position.

The Megger digiPHONE+2 (order no. 1013124) is for utility cable fault crews, jointers and contractors who have pre-located a fault on a buried LV, MV or HV cable and now need to stand directly above it before digging. A surge wave generator sends pulses into the faulted cable, and each flashover at the fault gives a magnetic pulse and a bang in the ground. The digiPHONE+2 picks up both and shows the time between them. The fault arrow tells you whether you are moving towards or away from the fault, and the lowest time difference marks the dig point. The cable compass shows whether you are left or right of the cable and the angle it runs to the sensor, so you stay on the route.

From Megger’s datasheet and product page: the ground microphone has more than 120 dB gain and an acoustic dynamic range above 110 dB. The sensor is IP65, weighs 2.2 kg with the telescopic handle, and the carrying bar adjusts from 450 to 750 mm. The control unit has a 320 × 240 colour display, stores 99 measurement series of 99 points, runs for more than 15 hours on six 1.5 V batteries, is IP54 and weighs 0.9 kg. Bluetooth pairs headphones and a GPS receiver. Background Noise Reduction cuts background noise by up to 30 dB, Automatic Proximity Mute silences the headphones before your hand reaches the handle, and the acoustic limit is 84 dB(A). Fault distance can be shown in milliseconds, metres or feet.

Which ground probe to fit, per Megger: the 3-point foot (tripod) on uneven solid ground, the 75 mm rod on grass and loose soil, the 18 mm rod on smooth hard ground such as asphalt, and a base plate on very hard, smooth surfaces.

• Does it work without a surge generator? No. It pinpoints the flashovers that a surge wave generator creates at the fault, so it is used together with one.
• What do the NT and NTRX sets add? The NT set (1013126) adds ESG earth rods for sheath faults by the voltage gradient method, plus Bluetooth ANC headphones. The NTRX set (1013168) also adds the Ferrolux receiver for cable tracing.
• What if there is no acoustic signal? Megger advises checking that the surge generator gives a stable flashover, staying on each spot for several pulses so noise reduction can adapt, and checking the measuring tip’s ground contact.
