Megger PD Scan Handheld Partial Discharge Scanner

The Megger PD Scan suits utility and facility teams who walk round live MV switchgear and want a quick, documented check for partial discharge before it turns into a failure. Two sensors are built in. TEV (transient earth voltage, 2–80 MHz, −10 to 80 dBmV, ±1 dBmV) picks up internal discharge in metal-clad switchgear. The airborne acoustic sensor (−10 to 70 dBµV) hears surface discharge and corona. External sensors plug into the Lemo socket and are recognised automatically. These include an HFCT (100 kHz–20 MHz, −10 to 80 dB, 50 Ω) clipped round a cable screen for PD in cable insulation, a contact probe for encapsulated switchgear, and a parabolic receiver for corona on outdoor HV plant. Results are evaluated and interpreted automatically, with PRPD and other views to help recognise the defect type.

A temperature and humidity sensor (THS 55) comes with every set, because both affect PD readings, and its values are saved in the test file. The camera adds photos of a defect to the report, and the QR scanner reads the asset ID from a label, so files do not need renaming. Reports are built in the supplied MeggerBook RE software. The 3.5-inch 320 × 240 touchscreen works with three soft keys. The Li-ion battery (3.6 V, 3.35 Ah) runs more than 8 hours and charges in about 2 hours. It is rated IP54, works from −10 to 55 °C, weighs 420 g and measures 220 × 80 × 30 mm.

Megger sells it in four sets. Set 1 (1011121) is switchgear basic, with an external TEV sensor, THS 55, function tester and standard headphones in the STD case. Set 2 (1011122) adds the HFCT SC40 for cables. Set 3 (1011123) adds a flexible acoustic sensor, an acoustic contact probe and Bluetooth headphones in the UNI case. Set 4 (1011124) adds the parabolic receiver for outdoor work. Upgrade kits take Set 1 or Set 2 up to Set 4.
