The Megger BGFS (Battery Ground Fault Simulator) is a demonstration and training tool for the Megger Ground Fault Tracer (BGFT) and Megger Battery Ground Locator (BGL). It provides a simple, repeatable way to simulate a range of characteristic earth faults on battery systems, so technicians can learn and practise ground-fault location safely before working on live installations. The BGFS can simulate positive or negative grounding, resistive and phantom (capacitive) grounding, and single or multiple grounds, making it the ideal platform for training and equipment demonstration.

Who the Megger BGFS is for

The Megger BGFS (cat. no. BGFS) is for utility, power-plant and telecom battery teams, and for training centres, that use the Megger BGFT tracer or BGL locator to find ground faults on DC battery systems. Instead of waiting for a real fault on a live string, an instructor can set repeatable positive, negative, resistive and capacitive (phantom) faults and let technicians practise characterising and tracing them, including use of the Wheatstone bridge on the BGFT.

• Seven switchable faults on six circuits: positive 2 kΩ, 50 Ω and 1 kΩ; negative 10 kΩ and 330 kΩ; plus one positive and one negative phantom fault of about 4.5 µF
• No mains or battery needed: the test current comes from the connected BGFT or BGL
• Operating 0 to 40 °C, storage -20 to +55 °C, 20–90% RH non-condensing, up to 2000 m
• Case 55 × 30 × 21 cm closed (14 cm high with the lid off); weight 6.3 kg (13.9 lb)

What trainers ask before ordering a BGFS:

• Does the BGFS need power? No. Megger lists the input power rating as none; the BGFT or BGL supplies the test current.
• BGFT or BGL for training? The BGFT is a two-part transmitter and receiver with an on-board Wheatstone bridge, locating faults to 399 kΩ. The BGL is one piece, locates to 100 kΩ and measures capacitance and resistance directly.
• What is a phantom fault? Megger defines it as a perceived short from one side of the string to earth caused by high capacitance. The BGFS teaches crews to tell it apart from a real resistive fault.
• Can it simulate more than one fault at once? Yes. Switches can be combined for single or multiple grounds, including a circuit that carries both a resistive and a capacitive fault.
