Megger 1008-022 Overview

A cracked sheath or a leaky lead can pull an insulation reading down and make sound insulation look faulty. The Megger 1008-022 is the standard-length replacement set for Megger 5 kV and 10 kV insulation resistance testers: three 3 m (10 ft) leads in flexible double-insulated silicone, each fitted with a medium-size insulated clip that opens to 18 mm. Megger’s lead-set selection chart lists it as the successor to the older 3 m set, part number 1002-531.

Who the Megger 1008-022 is for

The set is aimed at test engineers who already own a Megger MIT or S1 tester and need a fresh or spare set of the leads the instrument came with, for example after a clip breaks or the white wear layer shows through. Rental fleets and test labs often keep one spare set per instrument so a damaged lead does not stop a job.

Megger’s own application note, 5 kV, 10 kV and 15 kV Insulation tester lead setsPDF, explains the thinking behind this lead design:

• Poor or electrically leaky leads can give misleading readings and may cause perfectly good insulation to be diagnosed as faulty, which is especially likely with long leads
• The inner insulation is made in a different colour from the outer sheath so damage can be seen instantly
• The clips follow the 2008 edition of IEC 61010-031, which added requirements against arc flash and short circuits when a clip bridges two energised conductors

The note also stresses that isolated systems can hold a lethal charge during and after an insulation test, so leads and clips must never be touched while a test runs and the item must be discharged before disconnection.

Megger 1008-022 FAQ

Questions engineers ask before ordering the 1008-022:

• Why are the clips rated 3 kV / 6 kV when the set is sold for 5 kV and 10 kV testers? Megger rates the medium clip at 3 kV DC double insulation and 6 kV DC basic insulation, while the cable itself is marked 12 kV DC. Megger’s datasheet states the clip insulation protects the user from the output of its 5, 10 and 15 kV testers set below 6 kV; for higher test voltages Megger offers large-clip sets.
• Is the 1008-022 the replacement for 1002-531? Yes. Megger’s lead-set selection chart lists 1008-022 as the new part number for the 3 m medium-clip set previously sold as 1002-531.
• Will it fit a 15 kV tester such as the MIT1525 or S1-1568? No. Megger lists separate 15 kV lead sets for its 15 kV MIT and S1 instruments; the 1008-022 is specified for the 5 kV and 10 kV models.
• Can these leads be used on live circuits? No. Megger states the clips cannot be relied on to protect the user from live systems above 600 V AC in a CAT IV environment or 1000 V AC in CAT III. Insulation tests are made on de-energised, isolated and discharged equipment.
• When should a lead be replaced? Megger’s S1 user guide says a lead must not be used if the white wear indicator is visible or the insulation is cracked or broken.
