The Megger Fault Sniffer 2 is for LV network crews who need to find an underground cable fault without a cable test van or a contractor. Most LV cable faults burn the insulation and sheath. The built-in pump (about 40 l/h) draws soil air through a probe, and the dual sensor (semiconductor and electrochemical) shows the combustion gas level up to about 1000 ppm on a logarithmic bar graph, so you follow the rising reading along the route to the fault. Megger says consumers can stay connected while you search. The second sensor reacts to natural gas such as methane and warns you, so a gas leak or bio-gas is not mistaken for a burnt cable.

Under asphalt, sample through a drilled hole with the 7.5 mm borehole probe. On open ground, use the bell probe. The sensor rod extends so you can work standing up, and a water blocker with hydrophobic and dust filters protects the sensor. For very small gas traces through cracks, Megger offers the VSS 15 vacuum pump system with backpack (1012956), and bitumen plugs (400-pack) to seal the holes afterwards. The unit stores more than 2,000,000 measured values, has Bluetooth and a backlit 240 × 160 LCD, and clips to a waist belt. The 3.6 V, 6700 mAh Li-ion pack runs more than 10 hours and charges from 230 V AC or a 12 V vehicle socket. It is rated IP42, works from −10 to +50 °C, weighs about 1150 g and measures 192 × 100 × 87 mm. Megger notes it also works on MV and HV cables where short-circuit damage has burnt the insulation or sheath.
