Megger TDR2050 Overview

The Megger TDR2050 is the most advanced instrument in the TDR2000 dual-channel time domain reflectometer range. It locates faults on paired metallic cables – opens, shorts, joints, water ingress and other impedance changes – and its higher 600 V CAT IV input protection makes it suitable for connecting to live power cables, an important advantage for power distribution technicians.

As well as the dual-channel comparison, colour WVGA display and 20 km range of the TDR2000 range, the TDR2050 adds Step TDR (for higher-resolution near-end analysis), Distance-Dependent Gain (to keep distant reflections clear) and FindEnd (to automatically identify the cable end). A built-in power-blocking filter, 100 trace memories, USB download and TraceXpert software round out a powerful, self-contained fault-finding tool.

The Megger TDR2050 is for power distribution technicians, cable jointers and electrical contractors who need the distance to an open, short, joint or water ingress on power cables, including circuits that may still be energised. It is the only model in Megger’s TDR2000 series rated 600 V CAT IV with a built-in input protection filter; the TDR2000/3 and TDR2010 are rated 150 V CAT IV and meant for de-energised systems. Megger says fused leads must be used if the voltage between terminals could exceed 300 V, and the TDR2050 comes with retractable-sheath fused leads.

How the extra functions help on site: Step TDR holds the signal at full strength until a disturbance is detected, so near-end faults hidden in a pulse TDR’s dead zone show up. Distance-Dependent Gain (ranges of 1000 m and above, in 0.5 dB steps) lifts reflections from the far end. AutoFind sets range and gain and moves the cursor to the first major event, then the next; FindEnd finds the cable end for a quick length check. Trace tagging saves a 32-character circuit ID with each trace.

Megger’s datasheet figures: ranges from 10 m to 20 km, accuracy ±1% of range ±1 pixel at 0.67 VF, resolution down to 0.1 m, output pulse up to 20 V peak to peak, 2 ns minimum pulse width, velocity factor 0.2 to 0.99 in 0.01 steps, and output impedance of 25, 50, 75, 100 or 140 Ω plus AUTO. The 800 × 480 colour display has eight colour schemes. There are 100 trace memories with USB and TraceXpert. The Li-ion battery lasts about 12 hours and charges in 6 hours, and auto power-off is 1, 5 or 10 minutes or never. It is IP54, works from −15 to +50 °C, measures 290 × 190 × 55 mm and weighs 1.7 kg. Order codes run from 1005-021 (UK) to 1005-024 (INT).
