Megger Teleflex VX-PT V2 Overview

The Megger Teleflex VX-PT V2 is a high-performance, stand-alone cable fault prelocation reflectometer for use on low-, medium- and high-voltage cables. The “PT” (portable) configuration puts a full-featured Teleflex VX reflectometer into a self-contained field instrument, combining three-phase time-domain reflectometry with the advanced high-voltage methods needed to locate real cable faults.

It supports arc reflection (multishot, up to 15 traces per arc), impulse-current decoupling (ICE), decay, phase comparison and intermittent-fault location, plus partial-discharge detection. A measurement range up to 1280 km with 0.1 m resolution, 533 MHz sampling and 115 dB dynamic range (expandable with ProRange) resolves faults precisely. A large 15.6-inch Full HD touchscreen with pie-chart navigation, Ethernet with TeamViewer remote access, USB export to MeggerBook Lite and an IP65 body make it a powerful, connected field tool.

The Megger Teleflex VX-PT V2 (order no. 1014407) is for transmission utilities, HV cable owners and cable fault teams working on long HVAC and HVDC circuits, including submarine cables and interconnectors, as well as MV and LV networks. It runs from the mains in a rugged outdoor case. On its own it works as a three-phase TDR; with a surge generator and suitable separation devices it handles arc reflection, ICE and decay. At commissioning it can record a fingerprint trace of a new cable, which becomes the impedance baseline for later fault comparisons.

What matters on a long cable, from Megger’s datasheet: ProRange adds up to 40 dB of distance-dependent de-attenuation, so far reflections show clearly without distorting the near field. ARM Multishot captures up to 15 HV fault traces per arc reflection shot, which Megger says helps on PILC cables, long HV and MV cables and wet faults. The adaptive trigger uses Delta-U and low-to-high edge triggering, and no internal compensation is needed. Up to six traces can be shown at once for phase comparison, including L1-N, L2-N and L3-N and the differences L1-L2, L2-L3 and L3-L1.

More datasheet figures: a unipolar 150 V impulse (adjustable), 20 ns to 10 µs wide, at full power into any cable impedance; 50 Ω output impedance; VOP 10 to 149.9 m/µs; timebase accuracy better than 50 ppm; and hardware filters from 250 kHz to 4500 kHz. It tests energised LV cables up to 440 V AC only with the separation filter 1015307. A 64 GB SSD holds more than 100,000 measurements, every trace is kept automatically for 90 days, and traces export to CSV. Connections are three BNC for TDR, three BNC for HV prelocation, one three-phase Lemosa, USB, and Ethernet for remote control through TeamViewer on a Linux-based system. It measures 525 × 220 × 445 mm and weighs 18 kg. HV connection sets come in 5 m (2004385) and 12 m (2005067), and the LDE 800 range extender serves cables longer than 800 km.
