Megger MRCT Current Transformer Test Set

The Megger MRCT is for protection and commissioning engineers who test multi-ratio CTs and want every tap covered from one hookup. Connect the primary leads (12.1 m) and the five-tap secondary lead set (6.1 m, X1–X5) once. One button then runs demagnetisation, ratio and polarity, saturation, winding resistance and insulation on all programmed taps without a lead change. Megger’s patented simultaneous multi-tap measurement cuts test time by about 20% on multi-tap CTs. CTs can stay mounted in transformers, oil circuit breakers or switchgear, as long as the parent equipment is fully isolated.

Saturation runs at 50 or 60 Hz up to 2 kV. The MRCT plots up to 10 curves together and calculates the knee point to IEEE C57.13.1, IEC 60044-1, IEC 60044-6 or IEC 61869, including PX, TPS, TPX and TPY classes. With the DC option it completes saturation of CTs with knee points up to 30 kV, then converts the data back to a line-frequency curve. Ratio uses the voltage method, at ±0.02% typical up to 2000:1 and ±0.05% typical up to 20,000:1. Phase angle is shown to 1 minute (±3 minutes typical). Burden is measured by injecting rated secondary current into the disconnected load and reading VA and power factor. The insulation option tests H-L, H-G and L-G at 500 or 1000 V DC up to 20 GΩ and switches the leads itself. Output ranges are 0–30 V at 5 A, 0–300 V at 1 A and 300–2000 V at 1 A (5 min on, 5 min off), with 30 A at 200 VA and 60 A at 600 VA for 90 cycles.

The style number sets what the unit does. Options include basic or advanced VT testing, CVT ratio up to 800 kV, single-phase relay testing with an IEC 61850 GOOSE option, Bluetooth, and an onboard display or laptop control via PowerDB. Megger says every version, with or without a display, can run from a laptop, and a unit can be upgraded later.

Megger MRCT Case Study

In 2016, Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) placed a single order for 106 Megger MRCT test sets to verify current transformers during commissioning at its 765 kV and 400 kV substations, choosing secondary injection over primary injection testing. Before the order, Megger India tested and validated new MRCT features on around 35 CTs and close to 40 turret CTs in 765 kV substations. What CT testers ask before ordering:

• Ratio errors on site? Megger points to grounding first. Bond the chassis with the supplied strap, avoid ground loops (the H1 lead has an internal ground path), and short the other windings when the CT sits inside a power transformer.
• What is always supplied? A power cord, an Ethernet cable and the instruction manual. Leads, adapters and the carry case come with the lead option you order (standard, Kelvin or long leads).
