Description
Hioki FT6031-50: Rugged IP67 Earth Resistance Tester for 2-Pole and 3-Pole Testing
The Hioki FT6031-50 Earth Tester measures earth (ground) resistance from 0.00 Ω to 2000 Ω using the 3-pole fall-of-potential method or the simplified 2-pole method. A typical job: an electrical contractor in Dubai verifies a new earth pit and lightning-protection electrodes before building handover, then rechecks the same pits at the annual maintenance inspection and records the readings for the report.
The housing is rated IP65/IP67, so it can be used in mud and dust and rinsed clean with water afterwards. The supplied cords are wound on Hioki’s tangle-free winders, which Hioki says rewind about twice as fast as conventional reels.
Key Features
- Three auto ranges: 20 Ω, 200 Ω and 2000 Ω with ±1.5% rdg basic accuracy and a zero-adjustment function to cancel long lead resistance.
- High auxiliary electrode tolerance: up to 50 kΩ, which cuts down on re-driving spikes in dry or rocky ground.
- Earth voltage check: measures earth potential up to 30.0 V rms and gives a live wire warning; stable readings are possible with up to 25 V rms earth potential.
- Thin stainless-steel earthing rods (L9840): rust-resistant and easy to insert and pull out.
- Comparator and continuous mode: set a pass/fail limit and watch the reading while adjusting connections.
- Optional wireless: add the Hioki Z3210 adapter to send results to the GENNECT Cross app.

Who Is It For?
- Electrical and MEP contractors testing earth pits at commissioning and handover.
- Lightning protection installers checking down-conductor earth electrodes.
- Telecom, solar PV and substation maintenance teams doing periodic earth checks.
- Facility managers keeping yearly earthing records for inspections.
How It Compares
Compared with the Megger DET3TD 3-terminal earth tester, the FT6031-50 adds an IP67 housing, cord winders and optional wireless reporting. It also covers the same job as the Kyoritsu 4105A (see our Kyoritsu KEW 4105A earth tester review). If you need to test without disconnecting the earth or driving spikes, choose a stakeless clamp tester such as the Hioki FT6381 clamp-on earth tester. The FT6031-50 does not do 4-pole soil resistivity tests.

Hioki FT6031-50 FAQ
Can the Hioki FT6031-50 measure in dry, sandy soil?
Yes, within limits. Hioki rates the auxiliary electrode resistance tolerance at 50 kΩ on the 200 Ω and 2000 Ω ranges (5 kΩ on the 20 Ω range), so readings are possible where electrode contact is poor. In very dry sand, wetting the soil around the auxiliary spikes improves contact.
What is the difference between the 2-pole and 3-pole methods?
The 3-pole (fall-of-potential) method uses two auxiliary spikes and is the standard way to measure a new earth electrode. The 2-pole method uses an existing low-resistance earth as the reference and suits paved or indoor sites where spikes cannot be driven. Hioki recommends the optional L9787 test lead for 2-pole measurements.
Which standards does the FT6031-50 meet?
It conforms to EN 61557 for earth testers, EN 61010 for safety and EN 61326 for EMC. The pass/fail limit for your earth pit is set by the project specification or the authority’s requirements, and the built-in comparator can be set to that value.
Does the FT6031-50 have Bluetooth?
Not on its own. Fitting the optional Hioki Z3210 Wireless Adapter lets you send readings to the free GENNECT Cross app on a phone or tablet, where you can build reports with site photos.
What comes in the box?
The tester, L9840 auxiliary earthing rods (2), L9841 black 4 m cable, L9842-11 yellow 10 m cable with winder, L9842-22 red 20 m cable with winder, C0106 carrying case, protector, 4 × LR6 batteries and the instruction manual.
